With the outbreak of Wuhan Coronavirus, we need to wash our hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitisers (with at least 60% alcohol). These are essential measures to help us guard against this virus. However, frequent hand washing and use of alcohol-based sanitisers will make our hands very dry and uncomfortable. In fact, the ‘side effect’ of these actions is disruption of the skin’s natural protective acid mantle. When your skin is stripped of this protective mantle, it becomes dry and ironically more prone to bacterial and viral infection. Some people even develop dermatitis where the skin becomes red, scaly, painful and itchy. Hence, do apply a good, preferably fragrance-free hand cream to replenish your skin’s moisture level and protective barrier to keep your skin healthy, well and able to defend itself against any unseen virus and bacteria. Remember the skin is the largest organ in our body and our 1st line of defense.
